The Vilas County Courthouse and Justice Center share 330 Court Street in Eagle River. The Clerk of Circuit Court, two circuit branches, Sheriff's Office and jail operate within that justice complex. County counter hours are published as 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. The close offices reduce travel, but they do not merge the records. A sheriff report remains an agency record. A complaint and judgment remain court records.

Official Background Checks in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Law Enforcement Services operates the Crime Information Bureau, the state's fingerprint and criminal-history repository. Its public name-check product is the Wisconsin Online Record Check System, or WORCS. A general online request costs $7. A caregiver request costs $15. The paper route uses form DJ-LE-250 with the stated fee and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
A WORCS match uses names and other identifiers. It is not conclusive identity verification. CIB creates a state criminal-history cycle when fingerprints support the submission, so an unprinted citation or arrest can appear in a Vilas County agency file or WCCA without appearing in the CIB response. Disposition reporting can also lag. Use the response beside, not instead of, the court and local source records.

Its shared location with the courts makes follow-up easier, yet each office still answers only for the record it maintains.
Who Creates Vilas County Records
Jurisdiction can be the hard part. The Sheriff provides first response across 13 towns and assists Eagle River Police and Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police. State Patrol or the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources may create a traffic, boat, ATV, snowmobile or resource-enforcement report. An Eagle River mailing address does not prove the incident happened inside city limits.
The record chain usually runs: agency contact → Vilas Jail booking when custody occurs → District Attorney charging decision → Vilas Circuit Court filing → disposition reporting to CIB and, when ordered, DOC. Vilas County Criminal Records: What They Contain
A court record is case-centered. A CIB history is person-centered. A booking entry is custody-centered. Read the source label first, then follow every charge to its final disposition. Arrest charges may be amended, declined, dismissed or resolved under a different count. A closed case does not, by itself, mean conviction or dismissal.

Case codes also show record type. CF identifies a criminal felony case, CM a criminal misdemeanor, CT criminal traffic, TR traffic forfeiture and FO a forfeiture or ordinance matter. Wisconsin felony classes run from A through I, while misdemeanors use A through C. The offense statute controls the class and maximum penalty; a citation is not a misdemeanor merely because an officer issued it.

Timing explains some differences. A new arrest can appear in a jail list before a prosecutor files a case. CIB may lack an event if fingerprints were not submitted. WCCA may still display a dismissed filing because dismissal ends the charge but does not erase the court history. Confidential, sealed and expunged matters can be absent for lawful reasons.
Use the known incident date, case number and exact disputed field when seeking a correction. Keep copies of the source record and any certified disposition. A broad request to “fix the background check” gives the custodian too little to trace.
Wisconsin Public Access Laws
Wisconsin Public Records Law favors access but does not make every criminal-history item open. A requester need not use special words or always submit a written form. The request must reasonably describe the record. Custodians may redact protected details, withhold confidential material and charge permitted reproduction or qualifying location costs. A denial must state its basis and provide review information.

Helpful details include the incident number, date range, record type, requested images or media and preferred delivery. Location costs are limited to actual, necessary and direct costs when they reach at least $50. The Sheriff requires prepayment when reproduction totals $5 or more. These charges apply to Sheriff-held material, not an Eagle River Police report or statewide history.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Juvenile and confidential matters do not appear like ordinary adult public cases. The Sheriff blocks juvenile information before release. WCCA excludes juvenile cases, confidential types, sealed items and expunged convictions. Court filers must protect Social Security numbers, financial accounts, driver-license data and other specified identifiers. Victim and citizen-witness details also receive protection.
Wisconsin adult expungement is narrow. Under the main route, the person generally must have been under 25 when the offense occurred, the maximum prison term must be six years or less, and statutory exclusions apply. The judge determines eligibility at sentencing. Successful completion requires no later conviction, no probation revocation and satisfaction of probation conditions.

The form follows a sentencing decision already made; it is not a broad petition to erase any old Vilas County case.
Vilas County Jail Records Are Snapshots
The Sheriff's Current Inmate List is a generated PDF, not a searchable archive. It can show a current name, booking or custody details, listed statutes, class, bond and status fields. It cannot establish that no prior arrest occurred, and a released or transferred person may disappear. When the list is unclear or stale, call the jail at 715-479-0628 or request the booking material.
Vilas County Jail is designed for about 125 people and serves the whole county, including tourism-driven demand, court holds and local sentences. Its public correctional material includes HSED or GED work, support programs, Huber and electronic-monitoring forms, and PREA reports through 2025. Those records describe jail administration, not guilt or a complete arrest history.
Warrants require a separate check. No official public Vilas warrant-search database was confirmed. The tip411 tool receives anonymous tips; it does not search warrants. A person trying to resolve their own possible warrant should contact the court or law enforcement directly and use the docket for any public bench-warrant event.
Vilas County Supervision and Federal Records
Probation, parole and extended supervision are state-run through the Wisconsin DOC Division of Community Corrections. WCCA may show that probation was ordered or that later court events occurred. The DOC locator offers a limited public status view. Agent notes, treatment information and working supervision files do not become a public dossier.

Federal cases use a different chain. Vilas County lies within the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. PACER is the federal registration, docket and case-search channel.
PACER does not replace WCCA for a Vilas Circuit Court case, just as the federal Bureau of Prisons locator does not replace the county jail list.
City-by-City Criminal Records in Vilas County
Eagle River is Vilas County's only incorporated city. Wisconsin's official January 1, 2025 estimate places its population at 1,685. Other named communities in the county are towns or census places, so creating three city pages would misstate local government. Eagle River Police creates city incident and arrest reports, while people taken into custody are booked at Vilas County Jail and filed state prosecutions proceed in Vilas Circuit Court.

City records also require seasonal context. Eagle River covers about 2.2 square miles, yet large events can draw crowds near 50,000. Its 2024 report described about 1,417 documented calls per year, excluding self-started officer activity, with fewer than 2% resulting in criminal arrest. Those workload measures should not be recast as resident crime rates.
